Grout is a material that helps to hold tiles in place. It’s probably most noticeable in bathrooms and kitchens, especially if it’s dirty. This article suggests an easy homemade solution to make your grout look like new again.
The first thing you need to do is make a solution that will take the dirt and grime off the grout without damaging it or your tiles. To make up the cleaning solution, you’ll mix baking soda with water, vinegar and ammonia. You’ll also want an old bucket that’s laying around and an empty spray bottle.
Measure out about seven cups of water in your bucket, it should be warm but make sure it’s not steaming hot. Next measure out a half cup of baking soda, a third of a cup of ammonia and one-quarter cup of vinegar. Add all this to your bucket of water and mix it together.
Your solution will be ready as soon as the baking soda is fully dissolved. Now you’ll want to transfer the solution to your spray bottle. You can do this in your bathtub using a funnel and there will be less of a mess to clean up.
Before you clean the grout with your solution you should perform a preliminary cleanup of the tiles. Floors should be mopped the way you’d normally do them and walls should be wiped down the same way. Once that’s out of the way you can begin.
Now find a scrubbing brush and make sure it’s clean, you’ll also want to rinse it off periodically during the process. Now begin spraying the dirty grout with the solution you made earlier. Begin scrubbing the solution between the tiles with your brush. You’ll notice dirty puddles forming as you work on floors, just wipe these up with a clean towel as you go.
When you’re done you should notice that your grout is white and should look the way it did when your tiles were first installed. You should do one final mop of floors or a wipe down of walls to pick up and leftover residue. Lastly have a cup of coffee or something, you deserve it!
Hopefully, this tutorial helped you create an easy grout cleaning solution out of common household items. If you were cleaning your grout for the first time, it may have been a chore. Remember to clean it periodically and it will be much easier in the future.
